On Friday October 18, a large group of the Tiger Tales Journalists traveled to Kent State University for a full day journalism workshop.
The Ohio Scholastic Media Association put the workshop on, and students attended a range of sessions to learn about different facets of journalism.
Students attended “Become Your School’s News Daddy,” where they learned to use teleprompting software from Peter Bobkowski, Kent State School of MDJ & Knight Chair in Scholastic Journalism. In the session, students learned how to prepare, record and edit school news for YouTube Shorts, Instagram Stories or TikTok.
Further, students had an opportunity to get feedback on their photography portfolios from the year with Associate Professor Dave Foster of Kent State MDJ.
In addition, students heard about career trajectories from Dylan Scott, senior correspondent and editor of Vox. He discussed how the journalism field has changed dramatically in the past 20 years.
The last session students attended was focused on Careers in Social Media and Digital Public Relations. Led by Michele Ewing, professor in the Kent State MDJ, students learned what it is like to work with social media influencers. Further, they learned about planning and executing communication campaigns across digital and social channels. Students had a chance to hear about careers focused on developing strategic relationships with online thought leaders, influencers and audiences through social listening, data and analytics and digital storytelling/content development.
