Chagrin Falls Exempted Village Schools math teacher, Mr. Geoff Brown, has been given the honor to receive the Mathematical Association of America’s (MAA) Edyth May Sliffe Award.
The Edyth May Sliffe Award is won by teachers who encourage their students to learn math inside and outside of school and motivate them to enter math competitions. The winners of the Edyth May Sliffe Award will receive $500, recognition on MAA’s website and social media, and a completely paid trip and ticket to go to the MAA MathFest in August of 2024.
Brown was nominated because of his dedication to his work and his encouragement to engage his students to participate in a math competition. Brown was nominated by the Director of Curriculum, Becky Quinn.
Chagrin Falls Middle School is very lucky to have a wonderful teacher like Mr. Brown be a part of the students’ learning process. Brown helps his students in any way he can and can motivate them to learn more and more each day.
Quinn said, “Mr. Brown is a very engaging, dedicated, and inspirational educator. He is truly an asset to Chagrin Falls Middle School and the entire Chagrin Falls Exempted Village School District.” She continued, “He continues to encourage students to persevere and has a deep understanding of not only the academic needs of his advanced and gifted students, but also the social and emotional needs they possess.”
Brown helps his students achieve greatness by allowing test corrections, letting his students come to him for help when they need it, and using real-world problems in math. Brown agrees that one of the best parts about teaching is that something new is learned every day. He also enjoys seeing how his students work and learn.
Brown is an excellent choice for The Edyth May Sliffe Award winner. He deserves this award for many reasons, Chagrin Falls Exempted Schools are proud to have him as a part of their team.
Quinn showed deep enjoyment of Brown’s work in the Chagrin Falls school district. She also showed appreciation for his work in the students’ education. She said, “Mr. Brown is a very engaging, dedicated, and inspirational educator”. She also says “He is truly an asset to Chagrin Falls Middle School and the entire Chagrin Falls Exempted Village School District”.
Brown went to Kalamazoo College. He enjoys astronomy and soccer.
